Make The Home Safe for Babies: Some Cleaning Tips

Whether you have a new addition to your family on its way, you already have a baby, or you care for small children at your home on a regular basis, it is important to think about the way you clean your home. What may seem perfectly normal to an adult can be potentially dangerous to a small child. Because their little bodies are still developing, they do not tend to easily tolerate various chemicals, cleaning agents, and even common detergents that adults encounter all the time. Fortunately, there is usually a safer way to clean around babies. Here are a few ideas to consider.

babyAlternatives To Harsh Chemicals

It might not bother you much to drench a rag in bleach and start scrubbing items to get them clean. Yet the fumes that come from chemicals like bleach, ammonia, and other common household cleaners can easily irritate and adversely affect a baby’s respiratory system. Consequently, if you see a need to use such chemical cleaners in your daily cleaning routine around the house, make sure to do so far away from the presence of babies. In many cases, it is even a good idea to take items outside to clean them with these sorts of chemicals to ensure that you do not cause your baby to exhibit breathing problems from inhaling such substances. Another precaution you can take is to follow up with a thorough rinsing of items with water to help to ensure that you have removed any residues left behind by chemical cleaners. When cleaning surfaces, such as countertops and changing tables, a safer alternative to standard cleaners is to make your own nontoxic cleaners from common household items like food grade white vinegar, 3 percent hydrogen peroxide, and baking soda.

Everyone has to wash their clothes at some point. Unfortunately, many modern detergents and fabric softeners contain perfumes and chemicals that can make adults allergic and sick, let alone little children. For this reason, it is a good idea to pay very close attention to the ingredients in the detergents and fabric softeners you use. Your skin happens to be the largest organ of your body and any chemicals in your clothes have easy contact with your and your baby’s skin. One way to avoid problems your baby might exhibit from using leading commercial laundry detergents is to make your own. One way to do this is to buy a bar of Zote and melt it in boiling water to formulate your own washing detergent. A lot of people find that they and their kids feel much better after stopping using top brand laundry detergents. So, if you or your baby suffer with chronic illness, the culprit may be your laundry detergent. It is certainly easy to test that theory for yourself.

clean floorCleaning Your Floors

One of the most common causes of allergies and asthma flare ups in babies and small children comes from having carpet. When you run a vacuum over your carpet, this essentially kicks dust, dirt, and in some cases even pet dander into the air. It’s a situation where cleaning can potentially make your baby sick. One way to avoid this problem is to replace your carpets with tile or wood flooring instead. This makes it much easier to clean with a simple mopping or by using a robotic floor cleaner like Neato XV-21. If this is neither convenient, nor cost effective for you, then it is possible to purchase a vacuum that filters the air as you run it over your floor. You can also purchase air purifiers to help keep the air in a room where your baby is clean from harmful contaminants as well.

If you take the time to rethink how you clean your home when babies are around, you can ensure that your home is fit for a baby to inhabit. In turn, your child will exhibit better health. This will further help to ensure against needing to take your baby to the doctor so frequently as well. Give your child the healthy head start they deserve.

4 Hardwood Floor Cleaning Tips For Long Lasting Maintenance

Hardwood floors are a great feature in any home. Whether the interior design is traditional, transitional or contemporary, wood flooring offers timeless style, character and beauty. With proper care and maintenance, wood flooring will look like new for years. Here are some helpful cleaning tips:

1. Vacuum the Floors

Take the time to vacuum hardwood floors once a week. Dust contains grit and fine particles that will wear through the floor’s finish if left on the floor. Vacuum using a setting that’s appropriate for hard surfaces. Don’t use attachments with rotating brushes or bristles that can scratch the finish. Sweepers like the iRobot SCOOBA 390 or Roomba 650 will do an excellent job vacuuming hardwood floors. If you don’t have access to a vacuum cleaner, use a dust mop or microfiber sweeper.

2. Clean Up Spills

It’s important to clean up spills as soon as possible. Liquids that contain food coloring, chemicals and acidic substances can damage a hardwood floor quickly. If liquids remain on the floor for a period of time, they can cause the wood to warp, crack or split and damage the finish. Be careful of any products that contain ammonia or bleach that can discolor hardwood flooring immediately. Protect floors from any standing water by placing trays under all indoor potted plants. Some hardwood floors are available with a stain resistant finish that keeps spills and stains from penetrating the wood and makes cleanup easier.

3. Wax the Floors

Wax hardwood floors on a regular basis with a wax that’s recommended for the floor. After cleaning the floors with a vacuum, iRobot Scooba 390, Roomba 650, dust mop or sweeper, apply a coat of wax. If using a paste wax, let the wax dry to a white color, then buff the floor with a buffer to rejuvenate the wax shine. With normal daily use, hardwood floors only need to be waxed a couple of times a year. If the floor has a polyurethane or varnish finish, only use waxes that are recommended for those finishes.

4. Protect the Floors

Protect and keep floors cleaner by using rugs in high-traffic areas. The normal wear-and-tear of walking across the floor several times a day will eventually wear down the finish. For an entry, use a rug or runner that’s four to six feet long to provide enough length to walk-off dirt and moisture on shoes. For interior rooms, rugs should protect the floor areas that are used the most. Make sure rugs have a non-slip pad underneath that does not adhere to the wood. Periodically, clean the rugs and the floor area under the rugs with a vacuum, iRobot Scooba 390, Roomba 650, or dust mop to remove dust and grit that has accumulated.

Easy Tips to Keep Your Home Spotless

Even if there isn’t time to scrub and scour every single day a home can be kept clean and inviting by simply working at it a little each day. The following are some great tips to make cleaning easier and faster, and to having that spotless home that everyone wants, but few seem to have.

Eliminate Clutter Through Out The House
The most important part of keeping a spotlessly clean house is eliminating clutter. Make certain that everything has a place to be and keep it there. This doesn’t have to be done all at once either, simply start right now putting things where they belong. (Not in the kitchen drawer)If there are items that are no longer used throw them away or give them to someone who can use them.

Kitchen, Living Room And Dining Room Tips

  • Cluttered counter tops and tables can make a home look dirty when it is actually spotless. Take everything off of the counter tops and tables, and put it away, throw it out, or give it away. Of course bare counter tops and tables don’t look much better. So, get creative and make arrangements with the items that you are sure you want to keep. Potted flowers and candles look great sitting around and they smell good.
  • If you have lament counter tops using furniture polish or even tire shine will give them new luster.
  • Automobile vinyl protectant will also make plastic trash cans and vinyl furniture look like new.
  • Cleaning off the table that often turns into a catch all is a great way to improve the total look of the kitchen or dining room.
  • Putting a vase with fresh flowers on tables will discourage people from dropping items on the table.

Bathroom Tips

  • As with the kitchen cluttered counters are often the culprit of a messy bathroom. Remove everything from the counter tops and see what a difference that alone will make.
  • Hang pretty towel sets on towel racks and dare anyone to use them.
  • Placing a pretty wicker basket on the floor close to the toilet for magazines is a great way to make the bathroom look better and discourage clutter.

Bedrooms

  • Making up the bed each morning and putting throw pillows everywhere will have all eyes on the bed and not under it. So even if junior doesn’t keep his room spotless it will look like he does.
  • Keep clean clothes where they belong, and keep drawers and closet doors closed.
  • Remove all clutter from bedside tables, and dressers.

These are only a few things that you can do to help make sure that your home always looks spotlessly clean.
